This Is The Lowest Point In My Beloved Club’s History
Ipswich have of course been in Division 3 and 4…but both times the club were on the ascendency - it’s not like they had been relegated to division 3 or anything, the club turned pro, and slowly worked its way up to the Top Division by 1962 and have remained in the top 2 divisions ever since.
We’ve had mid-table obscurity in the second tier before, but we weren’t losing 5-2 and 7-1 to newly promoted teams in such an embarrassing manner. We’ve been thrashed before - but the Man United 9-0 game was when a young manager with new ideas took over and was already rebuilding for an already doomed side with a plan to get back to the Premier League, which worked brilliantly - focusing on exciting young talent and getting the side to pass the ball around.
Not only are the results bad, but we’re playing some of the dullest football I’ve ever seen. No attempt to play the ball around, just constant hoofing. There are no characters in the dressing room we can relate to - some ’characters‘ but no Matt Holland type figures who adored wearing the shirt. We have zero chants about players as they’re all average Championship journeymen concerned only about their pay cheques.
The saddest part is, I have no idea what the solution could be. Relegation could be a total disaster, but also could be a way to totally clean the dressing room and go for young, hungry lower league players with potential.
Who knows.
